September 11, 2012 - Mystic and Stonington, Connecticut

Today's "adventures" took us back to Mystic Seaport, the world's largest maritime museum, http://www.mysticseaport.org/ to finish touring the 19-acre working replica of a 19th century port and to Historic Stonington Borough, http://www.stoningtonboroughct.com/ called "the most beautiful seaside village in New England".  We decided they may be right!   And, after you look at some of our pictures and the vibrant colors, you might  agree!  Absolutely spectacular!  The Borough is a narrow, mile long peninsula pointing into Fisher's Island Sound and Little Narragansett Bay so everything is within walking distance.  And, as we learned today, Stonington Borough is also where the recently released (August) movie Hope Springs, starring Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones, was filmed.  Can't wait to see it!

OK...back to our first stop, Mystic Seaport.  I didn't write much or post pictures after we went for the first day (Sept. 6) of our "two day ticket" because of the slow internet service while we were staying in West Kingston, RI.  I did get the web albums uploaded and posted last night, so if you go back to our Sept. 6 blog and click on the links you can see the pictures of our "first day" at Mystic Seaport.  Now, a little more information.....

Mystic Seaport is a complex of more than 40 buildings from the 19th century.  Despite its fascinating exhibits of ship models and authentic scrimshaw, the main attraction is its preservation shipyard and its fleet of antique ships, including the Charles W. Morgan, built in 1841 and the last wooden whaling ship in the world; the Joseph Conrad, built in Denmark in 1882; the L.A. Dunton, a "once popular" New England round-bow schooner built in 1921; and the Sabino, built in 1908 in East Boothbay, Maine a coal-fueled steamship that takes passengers on cruises along the Connecticut coast.
