John Wesley Powell said "the wonders of the Grand Canyon cannot be adequately represented in symbols of speech nor by speech itself". How true, how true! And God is SO GOOD!
It's really amazing...on our way back to the car this evening, every few steps we would stop and take another picture! The light continuously changes everything in a split second and because everything is so beautiful we keep taking pictures because we can't remember if we have "captured" each beautiful sight! As Emily said, "you keep taking pictures because you want to make sure when you leave that you have done justice in your pictures to the beauty of the canyon"! She and Hugh have been here numerous times...hiked to the bottom of the canyon at least 4 times I think (Emily, correct me if I'm wrong) and will be back again in 2 weeks! Sure wish we could stay and be here when they are here...but Irmo calls! I guess 4 months is long enough to run away from home the first time!
I digress...anyway, as we were walking to the car we joked "don't look at the canyon because if we do we will keep taking pictures and never leave"!
Since we "spontaneously" planned this trip and have extended it numerous times because we were having so much fun wherever we were at the time, we did not pay attention to the fact that we would be at the Grand Canyon Labor Day weekend! Not the smartest planning because it is packed! So many people, so many kids, so many cameras! There were so many times today that it was so crowded, and so many people were taking "group" shots that everywhere we walked we were in the "line of fire" and getting in the way of photo shoots! And everybody else was too! And, I know this will surprise you, but some of the people were rude and pushy! I don't think we have ever experienced anything like it!
Regardless, we still had a wonderful day! The weather was amazing and the canyon awesome as you can see in the pictures. We just didn't cover as much territory as we had hoped to today. At least we still have tomorrow...hopefully everybody else will go home to get the kids ready for school!
OK, I really don't mean it! What I have learned is that EVERYBODY should experience, and take the kids, to our country's national parks and monuments. They are truly "God's Gift" to us...and visiting these parks and learning more about the history of this country has been the most rewarding and valuable experience! Glenn and I have been to many national parks and monuments over the years in our travels but never took a trip with the intention of concentrating on visiting the parks and monuments. We have always had "other plans" and occasionally "happened upon" one of the parks or monuments. Kind of like "wow, that was nice" or "I'm glad we did that", and moved on. I don't know if this makes any sense but we are so glad that we have taken this time in our lives to really experience, learn more about, and appreciate this great and amazing country we live in. OK, nuff said...
Christa Sadler said "there are places in the world that you see with your eyes and there are those that you see with your heart". The Grand Canyon is definitely one of those places and is exactly that...GRAND!
