First of all, we LOVE Harpers Ferry and definitely want to come back to relax AND explore all of the surrounding sites and wonderful small "historic" towns!
We started the day at Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, which borders our campground.
Standing on Civil War Battlefields definitely puts everything in perspective.....!!! Harpers Ferry changed hands 8 times during the war!!!!!
I'm sure sometimes Glenn wants to shoot me...but not today! We were having too much fun!!!!!
Back to the shuttle to go to Lower Harpers Ferry...we could have stayed there for days!!!!!
This is where the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers join.
Lunch at Hannah's
And then a chat with the owner while he is "smokin" the ribs!
Now...back to exploring!
This was the 1812 uniform.
The floods are so devestating...check out the marker in the Hardware Store picture to see the levels and years Harpers Ferry was flooded.
We have had such fun here, and it's been quite an educational experience, we decided it would be a shame not to go to Antietam, since it is so close.
And what a beautiful drive it was...the weather was amazing and we went through some lovely, quaint historic towns.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention some of the really nice people we have met. This is Joanie and Eddie Martin from St. Matthews, SC. I think we all could have stood there and talked for hours! But, unfortunately, the park was about to close and we still had lots to see!
We've made our "whirlwind" trip through Antietam and are headed home when we saw the signs for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park. Of course, we had to stop!
Now, back to West Virginia! I'm better prepared to take pictures of Shepherdstown as we drive back through!
What a fun day!!! We are SO BLESSED!!!!!
Click on the two links below to see all of the pictures we took today. It's really worth it!!!
