June 5-9, 2012 - Appomattox and Charlottesville VA

We sure have been having fun!  So much fun that I haven't stressed about updating the blog every day.  I will keep updating it, but not necessarily every day like I did last summer.  So just keep checking back if you want to "go on our adventure" with us!  I'm trying to not take so many pictures...ok, I can hear you laughing!  In my dreams, right?  Seriously, I am...I'm doing better but I'm not there yet!  Anyway, I am going to try to post a few pictures for those of you who get bored easily (you know who you are!).  And for those of you who want more information than your brain can hold (which is why I take pictures of signs and plaques...I frequently have "brain overload"!), I will post links to our albums.  We figure, God willing, that when we are older and can't travel anymore we can look at the pictures and, hopefully, will remember what a fantastic time we had!

OK...I digress...I'm supposed to be updating so...here goes!

Tuesday, June 5th, we left Mt. Airy for our next destination, Appomattox VA.  On our way we decided to stop at the National
D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA (the 68th Anniversary Ceremony was the next day, June 6).  It is SO MOVING and a great tribute to our World War II veterans.  I took way more pictures of plaques than most of us have time to read...talk about "brain overload", but I did take them so that we can "zoom in" to read them when we want to.  Here's a few of them to "wet your appetite"!

I could go on and on about this memorial...we have so much to be thankful for!

Our next stop was the campground.  Very rustic but comfortable.

Even though Appomattox National Historic Park had closed for the day, we decided to drive out there to "get the lay of the land".

Here's the link to our June 5th album:

Wednesday, June 6, was spent at Appomattox National Historic Park, the Appomattox Museum of the Confederacy, and downtown "Historic Appomattox".  Brain overload again!  Even though it, too, was moving, we so enjoyed it...the weather was beautiful and we had forgotten so much from our US History classes in high school.  Physically being where the civil war ended puts everything in perspective...

Of course, again, I took lots of pictures that you history buffs will enjoy, particularly if you have not been there.  Click on the link below:

Our next stop was Charlottesville from Thursday until this morning (Saturday) to see my brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Pam, for two days.  What fun!  We so appreciate the efforts that they made (particularly Pam) to entertain us and take us places that we hadn't been to before.

We stayed at a campground close to their house and it was great...we will definitely camp there again.  During the two days we went to:

Michie Tavern...  It is next to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and is a complete 18th century experience...wonderful southern food and a unique shopping experience!  We highly recommend it!

What a beautiful view of Charlottesville from Michie Tavern!

Trump Winery for a wine tasting...yes, I bought some!

Wintergreen Overlook... for a spectacular view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Devils Backbone Brewery for dinner (no, we didn't drink as much as it sounds like we did!) and more spectacular views!

University Village to see Pam's mom (so hard to believe she is 90!).

Sticks for a quick but very good lunch.

Montpelier, the lifelong home of James Madison, Father of our Constitution and 4th President of the United States. William and Annie duPont purchased Montpelier in 1901, enlarged the house and preserved the grounds.  In 1984 Montpelier was transferred to the National Trust for Historic Preservation by heirs of Marion duPont Scott, and in 2003 restoration of Montpelier began.  Unfortunately we were not allowed to take pictures inside and we ran out of time (imagine that!) and were not able to see everything, but it was another fascinating "adventure"!

And, "Friday's after Five" in downtown Charlottesville...again, too much fun!

Wow...it's 2:44 am and I have got to go to bed!  I don't think I will wait so long to update the blog again!  I'm going to wrap this up with pictures of our campground in Charlottesville and here in Luray.

Glenn and the "girls" relaxing after a busy week!

Now it's time to plan our "adventure" to Shenandoah National Park tomorrow!

Until then, goodnight.....
