We obviously have not gone far enough north to get away from the heat yet! It was in the 90's here with a heat index around 100! Fortunately, we had planned to go to Harrisburg, the state capital today to tour the Pennsylvania State Museum, the National Civil War Museum, and the majestic Pennsylvania Capitol, all of which are air conditioned!
Our first stop was the State Museum, which was outstanding! Of course, the lighting was not good for photos but I was able to get pictures in each area by shooting in "landscape" with no flash. Some of them are pretty good and, even with the "not so good" pictures, we have good documentation of our visit.
The Capitol was designed in the American Renaissance style and incorporates various renaissance designs in some of its largest rooms...French in the Senate Chamber, Italian in the House Chamber, and English in the Governor's Reception Room. It also reflects Greek, Roman and Victorian influences in its art and ornamentation. The Capitol's centerpiece is a spectacular 272-foot, 52 million-pound dome inspired by Michelangelo's design for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Truly, words cannot describe the beauty of this building!
Our last "adventure" was the National Civil War Museum, which boasts that it "is one of the first museums in the United States that portrays the entire story of the American Civil War without bias to Union or Confederate causes". Really.....??? It was a good museum but "without bias" ...in Pennsylvania! Whatever.....
Again, another museum with poor lighting but enough to get pictures documenting our visit. As we walked out of the museum, we decided that we were "over the civil war" for the time being and ready to move on! Some of you reading this are probably ready for us to move on too!
Tomorrow we will head north with a 2 night stop in Bellefonte, PA...the home of Penn State and the Jerry Sandusky trial. When we were planning our trip and stops in April, we had no idea the trial would be going on and probably go to the jury tomorrow...it just happened that it was a good stopping point between Hershey and Niagara Falls. Plus, it has a Petco where the "girls" have an appointment to get groomed before they cross the border to Canada on Saturday! So glad Nik Wallenda's walk across Niagara Falls was last week! We at least (unknowingly) scheduled that stop right!
