August 16, 2012 - Marblehead, Mass.

George Washington was right.  It is said that when he first visited Marblehead it had "the look of antiquity".  It's still true!  Settled in 1629, Marblehead sits on a rocky peninsula and is graced with a wonderful mix of merchants' homes, shipbuilders mansions, and fishermen's cottages.  It is also known as the "Yachting Capital of America" hosting national and international races throughout the season.

We had a fantastic day walking around town, visiting Abbot Hall, the seat of local government built in 1876 and where The Spirit of '76 painting hangs, having lunch on the harbor, touring the 1768 Jeremiah Lee Mansion, and driving along the shoreline to the 1835 lighthouse at Point O'Neck.

We really enjoyed talking to Steve Decatur.  As a descendant of one of the First Families of Virginia (FFA) and a graduate of UVA,  we had quite an interesting conversation about the south (and shrimp and grits!)!  He has lived in Marblehead since college and also told us alot about the area.

Steve Decatur and his wife saw us downtown and stopped.

It was a fantastic day in a wonderful, picturesque, historical town!
