July 31, 2012 - Old Orchard Beach, Cape Porpoise, and Kennebunkport, Maine

I am posting this on August 3 so, yes, I am several days behind in posting!  One reason is because  the internet is so slow at this campground that I have been using our Verizon router. Unfortunately, the 5 gigs we pay for each month has almost been used and we still have 2 weeks to go before it resets.  We took care of that with Verizon yesterday (Aug. 2) which means...yeah...I can post again without worrying about exorbitant "overage" fees!

OK, now back to July 31 and our "adventures" at Old Orchard Beach, Cape Porpoise, and Kennebunkport.  Old Orchard Beach is one of Maine's oldest seashore resorts with 7 miles of sandy shoreline (as you will see in our pictures from some of the other coastal towns).  In a way it reminds me of Myrtle Beach when we were growing up except for the beach being so crowded.  I now understand why so many northerners love Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand's wide beaches!

Our next stop was Cape Porpoise, a small coastal village in the town of Kennebunkport.  Goat Island Lighthouse marks the harbor entrance between Goat and Folly Island.

The traffic at Kennebunkport was bumper to bumper...absolutely no place to park!  It was late afternoon so we drove through...then back through...and stopped at St. Ann's Episcopal Church and then Walker's Point, President George H. W. Bush's compound, for pictures.  We don't think the Bush's were home at the time, but the Secret Service were!  Oh yeah, have I mentioned how hard it is to take pictures from a moving jeep on bumpy roads!

Well, it is now August 4 at 12:40 a.m. and I am fighting sleep!  I had wanted to get completely caught up with posts but you will have to wait until tomorrow (or today, after I wake up!)!

  1. Yes, those beaches look very small and crowded. You just can't beat good 'ole South Carolina for beautiful (and wide) beaches!! Miss it!!
