August 17, 2012 - Manchester By The Sea and Magnolia, Mass.

We had a wonderfully relaxed day in two very quaint Cape Ann coastal towns, Manchester By The Sea and Magnolia.  We first took a leisurely stroll around Manchester By The Sea (and of course took pictures) and then went to the historical museum www.manchesterbythesea.org to see the exhibit featuring the photography of Steve Rosenthal  White on White - Churches of Rural New England.  It was great and a bonus was a tour of the 1823 Trask House, which has an impressive collection of period furniture, artifacts and fine art.  Tours are only conducted on Saturday afternoons during July and August or by appointment, so this was a treat for us. Before we left for Magnolia we had a great "late lunch" on the porch at The Landing and then homemade ice cream at Captain Dusty's...yum!

Magnolia is known for magnificant summer homes and the Medieval-style Hammond Castle Museum www.hammondcastle.org.  John Hayes Hammond, Jr., also known as the "Father of Remote Control", built the castle as a wedding gift to his wife. Hammond Castle also housed the Hammond Research Corporation from which Dr. Hammond produced over 400 patents and ideas for over 800 inventions. He is second only to Thomas Edison in producing patents. Unfortunately, we did not arrive in time to tour the museum so we will have to go back, but we were able to take some pictures outside.
