August 19, 2012 - Boston, Charlestown, and Cambridge, Mass.

Well, after GPS took us the long way...and I do mean long...to the Charlestown Navy Yard where the USS Constitution is docked, "Old Ironsides" was gone...yes, gone!  Bummer!  Come to find out, today was the first day since 1997 that the USS Constitution set sail under it's own power in Boston Harbor.  The trip marked the day two centuries ago that the Constitution defeated the British frigate HMS Guerriere during the War of 1812, and 285 people were aboard to honor those who fought in the war and to celebrate Constitution's successes during the war.  Of course, we were disappointed that we were not going to be able to tour "Old Ironsides" but we did enjoy the museum.  Check out the website http://www.history.navy.mil/ussconstitution/ and today's news stories about the event.

We walked the "Freedom Trail" from the Navy Yard to the Bunker Hill Memorial http://www.nps.gov/bost/historyculture/bhm.htm/index.htm, where I climbed the 294 steps to the top to get some pictures of Boston and, guess what, I got some shots of the USS Constitution at sea!  And, by the time we walked back to the Navy Yard, the Constitution was coming back into port and I was able to get some great shots with my zoom lens!  Yeah!  We still didn't get to tour it, but at least we got to see it!

We left the Navy Yard and headed over to Harvard Square http://www.harvardsquare.com/ in Cambridge.  We joked that we can now say we "went to Harvard"!  We enjoyed walking around the campus, eating another "late lunch" and trying out another ice cream shop (it's a dirty job but someone's got to do it!).

We left the Harvard University campus and drove to Longfellow National Historic Site, which was occupied by George Washington during the Revolutionary War.  Beginning in 1759, the Vassall-Craigie-Longfellow-House was continuously occupied for almost 200 years. The last Longfellow family member to occupy the House full-time passed away in 1950. It's beautiful and we did get some outside pictures but, unfortunately, we were too late for the tour.  The website http://lnhstest.brinkster.net/index.html is wonderful, though, and quite detailed with pictures inside the house as well as historical information.

Another great day and now it's late again!  The pictures have just finished uploading to the web album so, once again, I am just going to attach the links and then come back later to post some directly on the blog.
