Day 57- July 31, 2011 - Yellowstone National Park

Last night, we decided that we would rest today.  Well, we did until around 1:00!  Then we decided to drive the stretch from Old Faithful to West Thumb...the section we didn't get to do Friday because we ran out of time.

The sun was out and it was in the 70's when we left West Yellowstone, but right after we passed the turnoff to Old Faithful it had started raining (fortunately it was light) and the temperature was dropping fast!  Thank goodness we keep sweatshirts and rain gear in the jeep!  We stopped at Kepler Cascades and the signs at the Continental Divide (there are 2 places about a quarter mile apart) to take pictures.  Then we stopped at Shoshone Point, which overlooks the second largest lake in the park (Yellowstone Lake is the largest), and West Thumb Geyser Basin on our way to Grant Village. Oh yeah, we also stopped for elk!  Lots of elk in the West Thumb area!  We had decided we would eat a late lunch/early dinner at one of the restaurants at Grant Villege; however, the two restaurants had waiting lists and we were hungry so we went to the Village Grill and had hamburgers and fries (really good, by the way!).

On the way back to West Yellowstone we saw the most beautiful sunset!  Of course, we had to stop to take pictures!  I haven't looked at them yet because we went through yesterday's pictures tonight and are uploading them now so we can put the link on yesterday's post tomorrow.  Then we will get today's uploaded and posted tomorrow.  I hope the pictures are as good as the sunset was beautiful!

Tomorrow we leave Yellowstone...what a wonderful experience and, yes, we will return!  We saw so much but didn't get the chance to do many hikes...there are many that we want to do!  And while there are some very nice places to stay in the park, they were full this time of year and West Yellowstone ended up being a great place to stay!  Once again, we will be sad to leave!

Our next "adventure" will be in Jackson Hole, WY and the Grant Teton National Park!  Stay tuned!
