July 28, 2012 - Portland, Maine and Casco Bay

We saw enough of Portland, Maine and Casco Bay today to know that we will go back and spend another day before we leave this area!  It was such a fun day just walking around and, of course, eating on the waterfront.

Portland is Maine's largest city and it's motto is Resurgam, or "I shall rise again."  Why that motto?  So glad you asked!  Portland has burned down four times since its foundation in 1633!  Recent redevelopment has transformed the waterfront with dining and entertainment amid the working docks, and former warehouses have become the boutiques and galleries of the Old Port district.  Also, on our list to see, are the beautiful Victorian Mansions that have been built since the Great Fire of 1866. 

Yes...we will be back!
