Day 13 - Mackinaw City, MI

I hate to sound redundant, but today was also an amazing day!  A high of 74 and sunny all day!  We started the morning driving through the campground and taking some pictures of Lake Huron.  It's a very pretty campground...the section on the lake is really pretty and peaceful, as you can see from the pictures.  We are in the more "rustic" area because we requested a "large campsite for a 36' motorhome, full hookup and 50 amp power box".  Had we asked for a smaller campsite with 30 amps we would probably have been able to get on the lake.  Well, we live and learn.  We still like where we are and it's not like we are spending alot of time at the campground...but the lake sites are really perfect right now.

One of Glenn's hidden talents is that he is a very good photographer!  It's fun with both of us taking pictures!

Glenn wanted me to get on this rock so that he could take my picture with the bridge in the background.  As you can see, I'm not as young as I used to be!  I had to crawl up on it!

We then headed to the Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum...fascinating!  The US Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw was commissioned by Congress to be built in the very early days of World War II and, when launched, was the largest Icebreaker in the world.

Then it was time for a "late" lunch so we headed to Mackinaw Crossings, a Victorian inspired shopping center, where there are 50 "unique" shops, several restaurants, and lots of fudge and ice cream shoppes.  We had lunch at The Depot Restaurant, which was the old train depot.  Of course, we also had fun browsing in the shops! Mackinaw Crossings is connected to Central Avenue (their main street) so we ended up there and at the Mackinac Bridge Museum.

The "Mighty Mac" Mackinac Bridge remains one of the greatest construction and engineering marvels in the world.  The five mile long suspension bridge links Michigan's two peninsulas and Lakes Michigan and Huron at the Straits of Mackinac.  If you think that Glenn and I are "obsessed" (imagine that!) with the bridge, we are! As you can see from the numerous pictures we took, it appears that it just drops off in the water!

And if that wasn't enough for the day, we then decided to go to the Mackinac Point Lighthouse.  Unfortunately, the lighthouse tours ended at 5:00, so we just perused the gift shop and took lots of pictures of the lighthouse and bridge.

I think I mentioned yesterday that the area is famous for their fudge (thus all the fudge shoppes...probably more per capita than anywhere else in the world!).  Well, after smelling it all day, I became weak (even though I know I can't just eat one bite) and bought 2 small slabs...one german chocolate and one  chocolate cherry (I was also told that Michigan is the largest producer of cherries...whether that is true or not, I don't know).

We decide it's time call it a day and check on the "girls".  They are doing so well...I took them walking when we got back to the campground and they made some more friends today...3 little girls and their moms!  And one of the firetrucks was riding a group of kids around the campground and some of the little boys we met on our walk yesterday yelled out "are you and the girls going to come by our campsite today"!  Just too cute! We saw a sign today in one of the shops that said "Life is Good but it's Better with Dogs".  So true!
I'm going to finish off with some random photos taken during the day.  I know that it seems I am putting alot on the blog...but, after taking 287 today between the 2 of us, it was hard to narrow them down!

This is such a beautiful place!
