Day 16 - Sault Ste. Marie and Mackinaw City MI

We left around 9:00 this morning for a day trip to Sault Ste. Marie (pronounced Sue Saint Marie) and the Soo Locks.  It has been referred to as one of the great wonders of the world and is still the largest waterway traffic system on earth.  Initally we were going to take one of the tour boats through the locks (2 1/2 hours) but changed our minds when we got there and decided to walk around the town and explore some of the historic sites.  Sault Ste. Marie is also the 3rd oldest city in the nation.  Of course, we took lots of pictures...and some on Mackinaw Bridge and some of the bridge from the St. Ignace side ...which will be posted after I post Mackinaw Island and yesterday's pictures in Mackinaw City!  Maybe I will get them all done on the way to Munising MI tomorrow!  I bet some of you are ready for us to "move on" so that you won't have to look at any more pictures of the bridge!  It really wasn't bad driving over it and didn't seem like it was 5 miles long because of the beautiful view!  When we got back to Mackinaw City we stopped and bought some smoked fish.  We had a late lunch so will save it for tomorrow.

As you can see from the pictures (when you get to see them) when we got there it was cool...60 degrees and cloudy...then the sun came out and the jackets came off.  I think the high was 69.  We've enjoyed it, particularly since we know next we will be traveling to hot weather soon enough!

Driving over Mackinaw Bridge for the first time!  Love this camera!  Many of the pictures were taken through the windshield of the Jeep or glass at museums, etc.

We decided to take a detour to St. Ignace on the way.

Glenn tries to get decals everywhere we go for his jeep and green trailer.  This woman was so funny...and, guess what...she has relatives in Clinton SC!

Back on the road to Sault Ste Marie.  Passed Castle Rock and barely got a picture!

Arriving Sault Ste Marie...first stop...the Soo Locks!

We had lunch across from Soo Locks and then walked to the Tower of History where we had a panoramic view of the city.  Yes, I walked up the 292 steps huffing and puffing!  Then Glenn and I both walked down the steps and then on to the beautiful courthouse.

We head back to Mackinaw City and decide to make one last stop before we cross the bridge to Mackinaw City...the Mackinaw Bridge Park!  Yes...we are still fascinated by the bridge!!!

We leave this beautiful area (Michigan's Lower Peninsula) for Munising  and the Pictured Rock National Lakeshore (Michigan's Upper Peninsula) tomorrow.  Hate to leave but excited about our "next adventure"!
